Daily Prompt: I Got Skills

Ouch, that feels hurt!

Ouch, that feels hurt!

Today I log in into the WordPress and faced with today’s Daily Prompt like this:

If you could choose to be a master (or mistress) of any skill in the world, which skill would you pick?

I’m frozen for a moment for that question. As I said, I never planned to blog daily. But these nowadays, the topic from Daily Prompt getting more and more interesting.

Now, to answer this question, this would need answer from another question: “Is this skill something that defines me, or just something that what I want?” Because if this is just something that I want, I want to have the skill of a superhero. Not that I don’t have the cut for superhero, but as I being modest, that would simply impossible, right? Except that if we take account for future technology breakthrough, which maybe can transform human into semi-superhero-mode like Iron Man. But then again, that will also need a superhero brain, which I believe I don’t currently obtained yet right now.

But if there’s any real skill I would like to pick to become a master, after a very long thought, I’d like to become a master of a design art. That’s surely strange for anybody who knows me because they usually know me as a computer geek type person. But I’ve long give a thought about this phrase:

A job is something you have to do. A hobby is something you want to do. A wonderful job is a job where you can distinguished both.

My mind is really divided between the logical side, and the art side, between the left brain and right brain. I simply cannot decide about which one I truly love, programming or designing. But as I see my colleagues which has graduated from uni and work for some times, I noticed that usually the ones from the art “world” usually more prosper and had more fame, whereas the one from the computer geek “world” usually just stay behind the desk, and usually not-so-prosper. I myself try to embrace both world, which in turn lead to many confuseness (yes, I invented that word) and dizziness about my own fixed identity: how should I market myself in the marketplace. Sometimes too many options can induce unwanted sleepless nights I sometimes experienced —even without any caffeine intake as I don’t like coffee— and any decision should be made to straighten my path which is usually swinging from left brain to right brain and back again.

So that’s what makes me decide to take the offer to took the Information System’s Master degree back then. To make real decision, and sharpening my available options to a narrower and specialized spear tip that can do higher damage than composite blades made from dull short knives.

But even as the time goes by, I still can’t shake off my art soul, and I walk to left brain path, while keep watching from my edge of eye the right brain world. My friend told me about website http://www.coursera.org which you can take courses for free (and gain certificates) from popular university such as Stanford University, and the first course that I decided to take is Human Computer Interaction, which take both of the left brain and right brain world.

Sometimes I started to think that there are the third option, where left brain and right brain work together to define a man’s identity in the marketplace. But from my experience, it just cause me many chaos and confusion. Maybe I’ll understand better once I take a better view of one side of the world. And who knows, in the end, maybe I even got two spear tips in my arsenal? 🙂

What about you? If you could choose to be a master of any skill in the world, which skill would you pick?
